Pharrell sits down with a famous non-fiction writer and investigative reporter to discuss the role of privacy in the age of information. This is a topic I’ve been marinating on for quite awhile, and watching this video certainly gave me a new perspective I had yet to consider.

Hollywood Squadda – “Newports”

Hollywood Squadda, aka Squadda B of Main Attrakionz, just dropped a new video for his infectious ode to the infamously iconic Newport cigarettes. The visuals, by L.A. based director Tim Jieh, depict Squadda getting tatted amidst white girls and white snakes. Ever introspective, Squadda criticizes his own bad habit in the song and offers some advice to the smokers: “Stop fucking with them Newports!”

There is an undeniable amount of truth in Ab-Soul’s music. The same can be said about everyone in Top Dawg Enterprises current roster, but there is something that is uniquely daring about Ab-Soul. What sets him apart is the way he seems to view the government, as an all-seeing power making us civilians slaves to the hierarchy. In my opinion, he is completely right. Whether it be our civilization’s gross obsession with technology and consumerism, or our societal tendencies to look down upon anyone with less money or more pigment, the powers that be in this world (the corporation, the governments, the banks) have control over what we deem acceptable.

If we ever decided to actually do something as free-thinking people of this world and fight against the powers that be, Ab-Soul might be correct in his prediction that “If all the gangs in the world unified, we’d stand a chance against the military tonight”.
